Charity

What the bible says about

Charity

Jesus said "It is better to give than to receive." What does that look like in a Christian's life?

What Can You Do?

Giving From The Heart

All Christians, not just the wealthy, are called to give generously.

Contrary to the way our culture tends to work, a large sum given by a wealthy entrepreneur may have less value in God's Kingdom than a penny given by a poor woman with nothing left in her purse.

It's not the amount that God rewards, but the attitude of the heart. 2 Corinthians 9:7 says, "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

Showing Love Through Service

Money can be a big help in hard times. But it's not the only gift Christians are called to give to help one another. Offers to watch young children, clean the house, wash loads of laundry and run errands can be equally helpful in times of trouble. One of the most charitable gifts a new Mom can receive is a home-cooked meal. That’s true for families experiencing long-term illness, death, or any other traumatic life event.

The Bible is clear that we can give to God by giving generously and cheerfully to others. But charity isn't one-sided. For every gift given, there is someone receiving.

1 Corinthians 16:14 says, "Let all you do be done in love." How are we to receive charitable gifts and acts of service in love? By receiving help humbly, thankfully, uncritically, and unashamedly. Both giving and receiving in love require grace.

We All Will Be in Need Sometime

The Bible is honest about the trials of life. Jesus said, "In this world you will have trouble" (John 16:33, NIV). No one will be always and only in the position of giving charity. Sooner or later every person has a need they cannot meet by themselves. At some point we all need help. Admitting this can foster humility. And it is the truly humble person who can receive charity graciously, thankfully, and without embarrassment.

Love creates a fruitful cycle. When you have been helped by someone else, you are better able to give. And when you give cheerfully, generously, you are entering into the work that Scripture commands:

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world (James 1:27).
